Pitcairn Islands

"The Pitcairn Island Experience" on Oceania Marina January 18, 2016. Islanders, most descended from mutineers on The Bounty, come onto the cruise ship to sell items and give talks. There is much to say about Pitcairn, but I will leave most of the details out. Pitcairn is an overseas territory of the UK and is the least populous place in the world (currently 47 residents). Six cruise ships of various sizes are scheduled to anchor off the island this year (or occasionally dock if conditions are favorable and Captain feels it's safe). The island is actively trying to boost tourism and the UK government has apparently funded a new breakwater which should make it easier for ships of all sizes to get to Pitcairn.

This telephoto shot from ship shows how rugged yet beautiful the island is. This is HMS Bounty land - descendants of mutineers!

Howard saw a longboat full of people. He said they looked like pirates. I only saw the boat later, with one lone resident.

The islanders boarded Marina. Here's a pirate - Pawl Warren, who's often at the helm of the longboat.

The Pitcairners sold wood carvings, stamps, painted palm fronds, etc. (Pawl's tatoo reads Pirate Pawl.)

Everyone, even Dr. who I unfortunately would meet later, came on deck to see our ship circle the island.

Most residents live in the only town, Adamstown. It has a museum, library, prison, school (but not high school), no cars.
