After 2 days at sea, we anchored off the coast of the only inhabited Pitcairn Island. There are currently 47 residents. |
This telephoto shot from ship shows how rugged yet beautiful the island is. This is HMS Bounty land - descendants of mutineers! |
Howard saw a longboat full of people. He said they looked like pirates. I only saw the boat later, with one lone resident. |
The islanders boarded Marina. Here's a "pirate" - Pawl Warren, who's often at the helm of the longboat. |
The Pitcairners sold wood carvings, stamps, painted palm fronds, etc. (Pawl's tatoo reads "Pirate Pawl.") |
Randy Christian and family on pool deck |
I recognized former (maybe current) postmaster Dennis Christian, a descendant of Fletcher Christian. |
Howard with Pitcairn policeman from New Zealand. Howard bought a police patch for Al. |
Melva Warren Evans, who gave a presentation on island life. |
Everyone, even Dr. who I unfortunately would meet later, came on deck to see our ship circle the island. |
Most residents live in the only town, Adamstown. It has a museum, library, prison, school (but not high school), no cars. |
Ray's assistant/activities staffer views Pitcairn from the crew deck. |
Before leaving Marina, the islanders sang "Sweet Bye & Bye" for us, waved goodbye & some of the kids said goobye. |
Here's Randy Christian who I recognized from the book Lost Paradise. He is a major player on Pitcairn. |
I felt sorry for the poor guy who had to stay in the longboat all day |
We waited patiently while the longboat was filled with boxes of food, beer, unsold merchandise & passengers. Off they went! |
We took pics of them & waved & they took pics of us (once with a tablet) & waved. Whoosh, boat did a 360 & then they were off. |
Pitcairners (good & bad) returning to their unusual island to await the other 4 cruise ships scheduled to visit in 2016. |
