We flew to Huntsville, which is home to an excellent space museum, NASA. and several very historic neighborhoods. |
We drove to Birmingham for the night. In the morning we visited Sloss Furnaces Historic Landmark. |
It was raining pretty hard, so we simply walked quickly around the site rather than take a tour. |
The site is used for festivals, and looked like it would be a great place for something like that. |
We also visited Vulcan Park, which is home to the largest cast iron statue in the world. |
On a clear day, there's a nice view of the city from up top, but it was raining, so we didn't go up. |
It would have been nice to visit more of Birmingham, as it's very historic, but we decided we should head up to Joe Wheeler. |
It looked like this bridge was right off the highway but we ended up asking for directions and going way into the boondocks. |
After finally finding the bridge, we could see why no directions are given in the Alabama guide - too confusing! |
The GPS was a little flaky, but we finally found Joe Wheeler State Park. |
For dinner, we headed over to Elk River Lodge, where professional chef/Chad grandson Andrew prepared great meals for us! |
The lodge was pretty amusing - a long hallway of bedrooms, with a kitchen in the middle and living room in the front! |
Chad hasn't changed a bit - still a character, and still that funny, charming guy we've loved for years! |
It was great seeing Bev and Chuck! I miss my trips to Denver! |
Terry, Renee, Chad, Tom, Terry, and Ruth Saturday night |
Chad didn't want presents, but he got some nonetheless! |
 Bev, Chad and Terry |
 Renee and Terry |
Some of the many Pierce family members who came from MD, TX, and Alabama. |
 Chad and Alicia |
Marilyn came from CA and showed us a trick she learned at adult camp! |
It seems everyone had a trick to share - or a tale to tell! |
The resort lodge looked beautiful at 7:30 in the morning! |
I walked over to the marina and found this interesting sewer cover. |
Would you believe we had a big storm and power went out? Sure was pretty an hour later, though! |
 Sig and Ken |
 Mike and Madelyn |
Howard and I were intrigued by Alice's terrier, who looks like a miniature version of our rat terrier! |
 Mike and Tom |
More of the Pierce clan |
 2 of the youngest |
Alicia comforts the little girl, who didn't know what to think of the mayhem |
Andrew worked his butt off to feed a LOT of people. He cooked a variety of foods each night, and it was all great! |
Chad and Alicia share a rare private moment Saturday night. |
Oh how I wish I had taken another shot of Chad and Beverly! |
We celebrated Chad's birthday every night, but on Monday night, the cake replaced Alicia's yummy flan from the night before. |
Alice gets ready to shoot off confetti, and Chad gets ready to blow out the candles that Tom is lighting. |
Bev and Terry provided some shelter for Alice's terrier. |
Everyone loved the little girl! |
 Celebrating Chad's birthday |
Chad 3's birthday was also August 16, so we celebrated his birthday as well! |
