Chad's 75th Birthday Celebration
We flew to Huntsville, which is home to an excellent space museum, NASA. and several very historic neighborhoods. |
We drove to Birmingham for the night. In the morning we visited Sloss Furnaces Historic Landmark. |
It was raining pretty hard, so we simply walked quickly around the site rather than take a tour. |
The site is used for festivals, and looked like it would be a great place for something like that. |
We also visited Vulcan Park, which is home to the largest cast iron statue in the world. |
On a clear day, there's a nice view of the city from up top, but it was raining, so we didn't go up. |
It would have been nice to visit more of Birmingham, as it's very historic, but we decided we should head up to Joe Wheeler. |
It looked like this bridge was right off the highway but we ended up asking for directions and going way into the boondocks. |
After finally finding the bridge, we could see why no directions are given in the Alabama guide - too confusing! |
The GPS was a little flaky, but we finally found Joe Wheeler State Park. |
For dinner, we headed over to Elk River Lodge, where professional chef/Chad grandson Andrew prepared great meals for us! |
The lodge was pretty amusing - a long hallway of bedrooms, with a kitchen in the middle and living room in the front! |
