Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicalaria

Cape Coral, Florida

Sadly, the only places left for these owls to nest in this region are on municipal park properties with a lot of human activity including baseball. The nests are made very obvious with signs posted and white flags or rope surrounding each nest site. People walk their dogs right next to the owls who have become very tolerant of humans. They are constantly looking out for predators from above and when the shadow of a turkey vulture passed over one pair they dove down into their burrow.

We have them here in Richland WA also. Different groups are installing artificial burrows to help bring back the numbers of this great little owl in our area. Very nice image.
