Cudham Church: 3 February 2006

Nicky and I met for a wander around Cudham churchyard today. Nicky's photos: https://pbase.com/nickythurgar/cudham_church_3_feb
Weather was very overcast and grey with very little light, and very cold (-4 degrees C). Cudham is a charming country church, with three resident sheep who tend the grass in the graveyard ! The church is dedicated to Peter and Paul, the two most important apostles in the early church. The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087, and there has been a church on the site since the mid-10th century. Outside the church are two ancient yew trees, one at the south west corner and one at the south east corner. Both are older than the church - indeed, one may be about 1,500 years old. As yew trees were often planted in graveyards, this would suggest that the church was built on an already existing burial site.
