In Larry's Absence

On January 18, 2008, Lawrence Austin Hendrix, Sr. departed this life, aged 84 years, 7 months, and 27 days.

Born in Lauderdale County, Alabama on May 25, 1923, 'Mister Larry' (as I came to call him) was one of the smartest men I have ever known. I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was nothing on this earth this man could not do if he only put his mind to it.

Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber, Painter, Salesman, Musician, Singer, Farmer ... those are but a few of the many skills possessed by Mister Larry. In addition, he was husband of 61 years to his wife, Mary, who passed in March of 2006. As a result of their blessed union, there were three children ... Joseph, Nancy (my wife of 23+ years), and Dr. Lawrence Austin Hendrix, Jr.

He died peacefully in the home he built with his own two hands in the early 1960s. As you might imagine, there is not one square inch of this dwelling (or the surrounding acreage) that has gone untouched by either his hands or his feet.

The images that follow were taken during the few days following his death and are an attempt to illustrate the void that he leaves for his loving family and innumerable friends.

Charismatic, extroverted, brimming with self-confidence, and all the while bordering on braggadocio, he was described by one of his friends as 'the ultimate southern gentleman'. Gracious, engaging, and totally void of indecision, he was a man among men ... a true-to-life John Wayne.

I am a better man for having known him.
