The first Grumman E-2A Hawkeyes entered service in 1964, but these were unreliable due to problems cooling the overheated computers on board. The E-2B was a better variant (although still considered an interim soilution), but the E-2C seemed the ultimate Hawkeye, capable of working very well with the F-14 Tomcat. The C-version was built in three groups, being Group 0, Group I and Group II. The last group is being upgraded to IIPlus, or Hawkeye2000. Glass cockpits, 8-bladed propellors and complete new processors and GPS approach-capability are some of the features of the Hawkeye2000. Seen here is one example, 163849, of VX-20. VX-20 is the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Twenty (VX-20 or AIRTEVRON TWO ZERO), an air test and evaluation squadron based at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.
