The Hungarian air force faced new challenges after the demise of the Warsaw Pact. It had to cope with the hardware once delivered by the Soviets, but their number was less impressive than in countries like Poland and the German Democratic Republic. After the 1956- rise, Hungary never was considered to be 100% loyal to the communist ideas. A few Hungarian airbases were used by the Soviet air force, but they were quickly abandoned (around 1990-1991), making it possible for the Hungarians to focus on Nato.
