Since its humble kick-off in 1976 as a vehicle to boost rugby’s presence in Asia, the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens has grown into one of the biggest rugby events on the international sporting calendar. Every March, teams from the world’s top rugby nations compete in lightning-fast 15-minute matches in front of 40,000 spectators. And the action at Hong Kong Stadium is merely the epicenter of what morphs into a three-day carnival infecting the whole city.
The Hong Kong Sevens is considered the premier tournament on the IRB Sevens World Series rugby sevens competition. The Hong Kong Sevens is the sixth tournament on the IRB Sevens World Series (following the USA Sevens), and is held annually in Hong Kong on a weekend in late March. The tournament spans three days, beginning on a Friday and concluding on Sunday. The 2013 event will take place on 22–24 March. The tournament is organised each year by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU).
Past winners include Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji and England. The winner this year (2013) was Fiji who beat Wales in a thrilling final.
