Scientific name: Casuarius unappendiculatus (Blyth, 1860).

Cassowaries (genus Casuarius) are very large flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea and Australia. Some nearby islands have small cassowary populations.
"Cassowary" derives from the Malay name "kesuari".

The Southern Cassowary is the the third-largest bird in the world - the ostrich and emu are larger. The Southern Cassowary is also called "Single-wattled Cassowary".

Southern Cassowaries are a threatened species because of habitat loss; estimates of their current population range from 1,500 to 10,000 individuals.
