Pinon Imperial Pigeon

Scientific name: Ducula pinon (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824).

Imperial pigeons are smaller and boast less diverse colors than the fruit doves. They are widespread in the Indo-Malayan and Pacific areas.
A few species reach India and Australia. Imperial-pigeons have a broad gut. They swallow the often large) seeds of fruits whole, later voiding the seeds intact.

The bird pictured is the subspecies: Ducula pinon jobiensis.

This species is the second largest of the Ducula species; with the D. goliath being larger. Most Ducula species are larger, not smaller then the other fruit eating species such as Treron & Ptlinopus. In fact, the Wompoo Pigeon (Ptlinopus magnifica); the race from Australia is the largest of the Ptlinopus species; being as large as the typical "Imperial Pigeons". FYI, the bird in the picture is the prettiest race of this Pinon Imperial Pigeon; having the light greyish/white scalloping (edging) on the wing shield feathers.
