The uppermost part of the castle called The Upper Ward is accessed through Foog's Gate. Its date of construction is unclear but the perimeter wall on either side was built
around 1649-85. The roof visible in this photo is a late 19th century crow-stepped fire station, now serving as the castle bookshop.
