Kenya: Laikipia in Jan/Feb

A short safari staying at El Karama Lodge/conservancy in Laikipia, Nanyuki area... at end of January...

The El Karama conservancy is around 15,000 acres...including about 1,000 acres of farmland
However, wild animals are free to roam into and out of all of the surrounding conservancies...
There are no boundary fences.... only fencing directly around the living areas and parts of the farm...for safety reasons...

The short rains were late and had not finished...so we experienced some heavy downpours...
Some afternoons we were relaxing at "Sundowners"...but on a couple of other days it was just "Downpourers"
...enjoying a drink inside our vehicle...whilst the rain hammered down all around us

However, the cooler, wetter weaher encouraged normally nocturnal wildlife to show itself...
We spotted Striped (as opposed to Spotted) Hyena a few times, plus Aardwolf (insectivorous hyena) and Bat Eared Foxes...
all out and about during daylight hours...almost every day...

There was also a den of Silver Backed Jackals...with 5 pups...
Unfortunately, the smallest couldn't compete with the other 4, which were twice its size...
and it seemed to have been evicted from the den, by the time we left...so probably hasn't survived.

Our last afternoon was back in Nairobi at the Boutique Hemingways...
