In 1936, when Althea was 19, her mother entered her into a beauty contest in which first prize was enrollment in a school for models in London. She won, and off to London she went. The fruits of that can be seen in this photo which appears to have been taken upon her return to Glasgow for a visit. But whatever future she may have had in the fashion industry was disrupted by World War II.
