They are an endemic subspecies of the Black-necked Stilt and are found only on the Hawaiian islands except for Kaho’olawe.
Maneuvering around wetlands on long, pink legs, the birds use their needle-like bills to catch insects, fish and crabs.
Hawaiian Stilts are an endangered species which are vulnerable to introduced predators such as cats, mongoose, rats and bullfrogs.
