Minaret of Jam

The awesome 12th century Minaret of Jam, which supposedly later inspired the construction of the Qutb Minar in Delhi and which was built in the (now) middle of nowhere in Ghor province, was only "discovered" in 1943. Photos from two trips there...

what a great inspiration for all muslims to see this wonderful minaret still standing after so many centuries. truly a great piece of heritage and it should be preserved at all cost, for future generations,,insha-allah.

The Chinese were shocked by the distruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. They built a life size replica somewhere in China. As a revenge in the future they may bomb this ugly Minaret and rebuild the Bamiyan Buddhas.

Please, I am not a Muslim, but is there not enough admiration of this wonderful minaret across the world to start a fund for preservation? Afghanistan has suffered so much hardship, surely lovers of beautiful things would band together to help save this jewel.

Thanks for your best photo of the Jam Minaret that I have seen. I am interested in deteal photos. I have working in pre- monghl decirative motifs of Persian art in Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran. I have got a lot of photo. if you need any photo of persian decorative let me know.

Read Peter Levi's beautiful bool, 'Light Garden of the Angel King' for travels in Afghanistan and a visit to this magnificent structure before the Russian invasion.

I only heard about this minaret today in a BBC website article and I wanted to see more pictures of this beautiful piece of arcitecture. A Google search brought up your photo gallery. It must have been an awe-inspiring experience to be there. Thankyou for showing these wonderful images on the web.
