Josef Stalin's hometown... Totally unexpected atmosphere. It reminded me a lot of Turkmenistan, mostly because it was very Soviet and the area around very much like a steppe. We visited the Citadel ruins rising from the middle of town, the interesting Stalin Museum (definitely not to be missed), and the ruined cave city/site of Uplistsikhe.
