On November 1, we had the day off from classes for Todos Santos (All Saints Day). I took the
opportunity to tour Madrid. As part of the packet that we received during orientation in
Salamanca we received a very detailed map of Madrid and a brochure listing several walking
tours of the city. I took the Metro (subway) to the Puerta del Sol which is an area full of shops
that most tourists visit. Then I walked to the Plaza Mayor where the self-guided tour began.
I had heard that the Plaza Mayor in Madrid was not as nice as the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca.
Although the Plaza Mayor in Madrid is smaller I still thought it was nice. Unlike in Salamanca,
the apartments around the Plaza Mayor in Madrid still seemed to be in use.
There are murals painted on the walls. I think they are pretty although the women in the
paintings can be a bit shocking.
