The bird in this series of 4 documentation quality photos was found in the High Pines area of Duxbury Beach, MA. about 9:00am.
I first saw the bird from the back and noted that its wings were a light grayish brown and assumed that it was a molt of the Scarlet Tanager (the Tanager one might expect to find here). When I got my glasses on it and it turned so I could see the front and undersides, I was surprised to see a lot of yellow-orange and a big light colored bill. I started taking photos and when I got back to the car and checked the books, I realized that this had to be a Summer Tanager - a Massachusetts lifer for me and my first record for Duxbury Beach!
