Gallery #2 = WW II Overseas in July 1942 - Troopship SS Argentina

WW II GALLERY #2 OF 5..........The Converted South American liner SS Argentina, with about 8000 military troops aboard left the NY Harbor in convoy during the intense German U-boat campaign to destroy US Shipping and prevent aid from reaching the United Kingdom. The ship arrived safely in Scotland and the Battalion was ferried to Northern Ireland. Company �A� troops were engaged in building Airport Communications facilities north of London for the US Air Force to accommodate the growing Air Force. The Battalion HQ was later stationed in Bristol and Taunton, England, attached to the Fifth Corps of the United States First Army.

My dad boarded the SS Argentina in Boston Feb 1944 bound for Gourock, Scotland. His unit then had more training in England and ended up fighting the Battle of the Bulge. He lost the entire calf of his left leg near St Vith on Jan 23, 1945 and he had pain the rest of his life, but at least he got to come home.

My Father who served in the RAF boarded the SS Argentina in Gourock, Scotland in 1943 bound for Durban, South Africa where he remained a few weeks before boarding another ship for Port Twefik, Eygpt where he remained for at least 1 year.

My father, Michael Boccumini (US Army 42nd Rainbow Division) traveled on the S.S. Argentina in December 1944 from NY Harbor to Marseille, France.

Does anyone know which company was the radio company? My father-in-law, JB Shourds, was in that company and no one thought to ask which that was prior to his death. He was one of the guys who built the interior of the radio DUKWs.

My brother was on the troopship S. S. Argentina in March 24, 1944 arriving in Glasgow Scotland and from there to S. Hampton England, crossing the channel on way to Normandy. I am happy to find this photo. Now to search for S. S. Pope. Thanks for sharing.

I think this may be the transport my father, then Sgt. Jack L. McLaughlin, shipped out in July 1942. He was with an ordnance battalion from the Aberdeen Proving Ground. Is there a way to access the manifest for that voyage?

My grandfather, Brigadier General Gordon C. Hollar, was the commamdng officer of the troops aboard the SS Argentina on its return trip from Europe. He had been in the Iowa National Guard since 1907 and they were amongst the first troops to be shipped abroad in late January 1942. Some of the above pictures and comments help fill in the blanks of his time in Europe. At some time he was separated from the Iowa National Guard and put to work in London planning the logistics of the Military Police using his experience as the Chief of Police in Sioux City, Iowa. At the end of the war he had almost 900,000 POWs to care for. In one comment I read about the SS Argentina, there were a group of Americans who kept to themselves and cared for a group of Germans in shabby clothes with shabby luggage. I'll bet a buck that they were the German scientists who became the founding fathers of our missle program. As a final note, Grandfather was succeeded by General Norman Schwartzkopf. Might be related.

My grandfather S/SGT James W Inglis was on the SS Argentina in Oct 1945, the ship sailed from Le Harvre. I came across the list of soldiers who were on board today at the top it stated CAMP LUCKY STRIKE

Generally great pictures - thanks for sharing them, but I was particularly interested in the postcard? of Carrickfergus, as that's where I'm from originally. I grew up in a street which you would know as a large camp, and I believe the Rangers started life there. Could you share any info on the town as it was then?
