These images are from a breeding colony of Black-crowned Night Herons which is located in several trees adjacent to the duck pond in the Palo Alto Baylands in Palo Alto, California. The first three images are of a juvenile bird which has left the nest but not the tree. It will take two years before it aquires the plumage of the adult_gray and white with a black back and cap. The two to three plumes visible on the heads of the adults are only there during the breeding season.
