The Umbrella

Judges Comments

An interesting and creative shot with strong diagonals and a radial counterpoise. Unfortunately the use of a fairly large aperture
(f/2.8) at the focus distance used (1.66 m) has reduced the depth of field to about 110 mm (most of it I think beyond the image limit)
and rendered some of the most interesting parts a little soft. Because the strength of this shot is its intricate network of lines,
my feeling is that it all needs to be razor sharp. So I'd focus about halfway into the picture and try a smaller
aperture (like f/22) which will increase depth of field to about 315 mm. Still not enough but at least you're using all of it.
The point is that this kind of shot is not snapshot stuff where you rely on autofocus.
You've got to plan and do some calculations and know your theory really well.
