Eastern Amberwing (Perithemis tenera)

This is another dragonfly that has expanded its range into my local area. The northern limit for Eastern Amberwing barely extended beyond southern Ontario until this June and July when small numbers of them were found here further north in eastern Ontario. We also observed a similar northward expansion of the Giant Swallowtail butterfly this year and last year with the Blue Dasher dragonfly.

I went to check out these new arrival dragonflies after seeing a photo posted by Gary (photofair). Thanks to Gary for showing me where the best angles were to photograph them and also offering his longer lens for a couple of shots. They seem to have a habit of perching on floating vegetation in the water barely within range of my camera at max zoom.

FANTASTIC!!! I have tried several times how to catch them so that the orange wings show, but as you say, they perch barely within camera range. Camera shy? V
