Coral Hairstreak (Satyrium titus)

I have been wondering about Coral Hairstreaks lately because few have been reported so far this year. Coral Hairstreaks are not common butterflies and even in ideal habitat during peak flight season it can take a few tries to actually spot one. This morning I went out to a place where I hoped to see one and enormous luck and nothing but enormous luck brought one my way. I was standing around, looking off into the distance at a trio of quarreling Black Swallowtails, when this Coral Hairstreak came dashing in out of nowhere to land on Purple Loosestrife at my feet. After a minute of nectaring it dashed off into the distance.

Absolutely superb shot! The colours, the pose, the background... could not be better. I do think the coral hairstreak is almost the prettiest of the local hairstreaks. VV
