Banded Hairstreak (Satyrium calanus)

There has been an ongoing discussion in a butterfly group that I belong to over what makes a Banded Hairstreak and what makes a Hickory Hairstreak. Both species are very similar in appearance and vary enough in appearance that some individuals of one species may show one or more characteristics of the other species. I call it hickory trickery and I was fooled with the individual shown in this photo, which I first identified as Hickory but later was told that it is in fact a Banded (thanks Ross Layberry). I was a victim of hickory trickery!

There were Hickory Hairstreaks in the area, which is a rare species that I had not seen before (Banded Hairstreaks are widespread and the mostly commonly encountered hairstreak species in my local area), but on this day I missed them. I returned to the area a few days later and did encounter and photograph a Hickory Hairstreak (next photo).

Lovely capture, Chris! The only two Hairstreaks I've seen are Hickory and Acadian. I'm hoping to see a Banded this weekend as it's the one I haven't seen! V
