This afternoon I went out for a quick walk along a trail that has been good for early spring butterflies in past years and right away I spotted my first butterflies of the year: two Compton Tortoiseshells. I tried and tried to get a photo, but both butterflies wouldn't let me get anywhere near them. I also quickly lost sight of them. I walked all through the bush in the area trying to relocate the butterflies and along the way this chipmunk popped his head out from a pile of rocks. I took this photo and then found a third Compton Tortoisehsell, possibly a double count of one of the two I saw earlier, and I quickly lost sight of it too. I continued on for another 20 minutes before returning to the mountain of work I had to do this afternoon. I had no luck spotting butterflies after my third sighting.
