Viceroy (Limenitis archippus)

When I saw this Viceroy my instinct was to get on the other side of it so the sun would be at my back and evenly illuminating the butterfly. That's how I go about taking most of my photos: positioning myself so my shadow is in the direction of my subject. If I can't get into the position then I generally don't take the photo. But when I saw the stained glass effect the sidelighting was causing in the butterfly's wings I stood my ground. It's another reminder for me to not be afraid of different lighting situations than the frontlighting situation I am most familiar and comfortable with.

You made the right choice. I think this is far more effective and striking than if you had taken it without this backlighting.
