My find of the day today wasn't a bird but this small moth. I know very little about these moths - I don't know when they fly, where to find them, etc - so seeing them is always a surprise. The real "hummingbird" is now back too. I saw one fly by while I was out yesterday morning and saw another this afternoon in my yard.
Yesterday was a very bird-y day, my best day for birds of the year so far. A good diversity of songbirds like the Northern Parula, Blackburnian Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Great Crested Flycatcher were easily found. There were no rarity songbirds around but there was a rarity gull around. An immature Little Gull has been hanging around for a few days and causing a bit of a stir in the birding community. I saw it both today and yesterday mingling with the abundant Ring-billeds and a few Bonaparte's.
Today almost all of the birds I saw yesterday had cleared out. There was still one Northern Parula hanging around, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, and at least one Blackpoll Warbler. We had a hard time getting a look at the Blackpoll Warbler because their song has an omnidirectional quality to it. We tried to locate the bird by following our ear but the song always seemed to be coming from behind us. After walking up and down the path several times, with the song seemingly jumping back to where we had just been, we gave up without ever seeing the bird. The bird played us and it won!
