American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

This American Lady was one of the many butterflies I saw today. I ended up finding most of my butterflies when I returned to my regular patch in Stony Swamp. The new places I explored weren't all that butterfly-y, but I did see a Polygonia species butterfly with very dark above hindwings and I think I may have seen a Meadow Fritillary. Back at my regular patch I had my surprise sighting of the day, a very, very early Canadian Tiger Swallowtail. I also saw a Black Swallowtail, Henry’s Elfin, Eastern Pine Elfin, Juvenal’s Duskywing, a very worn Compton Tortoiseshell and lots of Red Admirals. Red Admirals were very numerous again today and were easily found just about everywhere.

Lovely photograph of the Lady, Chris. I have yet to see one this year. V

Sounds like a super butterfly spot. I have not seen the Cdn tiger swallowtail yet, nor had a chance to photograph this species this year (the two I saw went flying off when I approached). This is a perfect photo in so many ways.
