This was my first dragonfly sighting of 2010. I went out to see if the Mustard Whites I photographed a few days ago were still around and along the way I encountered a few of these Beaverpond Baskettails and a smaller number of Hudsonian Whitefaces. It takes 20 minutes by bike for me to get to the trail where I photographed the Mustard Whites but today it took me almost an hour because I was regularly stopping to look at the many Henry's Elfins I encountered to make sure that they were not something else. The occasional dragonflies I encountered slowed me down even more. Much of the time I spent with the dragonflies was spent just watching them patrol the trails and clearings, enjoying the sight of them hovering and beating their four wings asynchronously as they zipped around after prey, this being my first encounter with these ancient insects of the year.
