Winter Cranefly (Trichocera sp.)

A fellow pbaser posted a photo of a winter cranefly to her gallery and I commented that I never knew such a thing existed. I indeed never knew such a thing existed and wondered how she found it. But now I know how she found it. It wasn't a supernatural power but rather just a matter of learning where to look and what to look for. I recently learned that lesson and now I see and recognize winter craneflies all over the place. Today one let me approach close enough with my macro lens to get this photo. This was my first photo of the morning and it was early enough that I still needed gloves to keep my fingers from going numb. That same cold may have been what kept this guy still for me. By noon it was too warm for gloves and this particular patch of snow had mostly vanished.
