The name Nockamixon is of Indian origin, meaning "place of soft soil."
Famed Lenni Lenape chief Nutimus lived here. The 5,283-acre Nockamixon State Park surrounds the 1,450-acre Lake Nockamixon.

Hi! I live on Long Island and I remember before the lake was there. My mothers aunt and uncle lived near the valley. The state bought their farmhouse and built them a new home right across from what became one of the entrances to the lake. We used to drive through the valley from Kellers Church to get to their house. I remember my parents telling me that some day soon the whole valley would be under water. I just could not imagine the farms and bridges we'd see being under the lake, I do believe there was even a covered bridge over the stream. My great aunt and uncle are gone now and buried in Kellers Church cemetery and I have not been there for years and years. It looks beautiful today. I wish I could still see their sweet smiling faces at the end of my journey across the valley that became Lake Nockamixon.
