Yes, mother certainly was in her manic state then. She insisted we fly to Maryland for Christmas even though Mike was only two months old, and I had been at my new job at Platteville for only three months. On occasion she would entertain us by playing the piano at three in the morning. Food was initially delicious, but it was the same all the time. She just kept adding water to what was left over after each meal and stretched the servings out of the same pot all for every meal.

My ancient diary says we left (NH)on Thurs. Dec. 23 at 4:30 or 5 in the morn. and arrived (MD) 2 pm. On Sat. Dec. 25, we drove to Harrisburg,PA, and got back to Amherst on Sun. That was a very short visit for such a long trip! I can imagine that Mother wasn't very pleased with us! Don't know why we didn't stay longer, altho' I believe it was rather stressful as I think she was in a manic stage then. What a bunch of young bucks we are in that picture! Kids are cute, and Diana is beautiful!
