Sheep dog course (see notes below)

Three sheep are positioned half-way up the hill in the distance at the point numbered one -- a distance so far away the sheep can't easily be seen with the naked eye. The dog in the foreground is watching the trial of another dog, but when it comes his turn he will run down this hill, then go left or right around the center of the course until hidden from the sheep on the far hill. He will then come up behind the sheep and begin herding them down the hill as a group -- listening to the whistle or voice commands from his herdsman. In this timed event the sheep are supposed to go though the gates labelled 2, then to the gates labelled 3, then to the gates (not shown) labelled 4, and finally to the pen (labelled 5), where the herdsman comes down the hill and opens the gate for the sheep to enter the pen. Only two dogs successfully completed the course in the couple hours we watched, and the best dog, after the pen was opened, then split one sheep off the other two, before returning the sheep to the holding pen near the parking lot -- located some distance behind the spectators.
