Borneo Death Mask

Monday 28th February 2005 - Day 72

Didn't someone once say the plagarism was the mother of necessity? Oh, perhaps that was me. Well, seeing Ann's image from yesterday made me think.... hmmmmmmmm. Ann's mask is much finer than mine, and I'm sure it was originally for a different, more pleasant, purpose.

I bought this on holiday in Malaysian Borneo, one of the most exhilarating (and wettest) holidays I have been on. OK, total tourist capture stuff - but I quite like it.

This wasnt easy - the mask is well varnished and there were reflections everywhere. I managed to get the best result with painting with light - using a torch (flashlight :) ), and lit from a direction that deliberatly enhanced the spooky feeling. Believe it or not, I have two of these hanging on the wall, the other is much more face - and should be easier to capture.

Very colourful, but I like your low light to tone it down.

Very interesting mask, but a little creepy!

Very nice treatment! I know how hard the painting with light technique can be and this turned out really well, Lee. (I also understand plagiarism -- errr .. inspiration. Inspiration is definitely a MUCH better word. I plagiarized .. was inspired by Jude today.) I am just in awe of this mask shot.

Had to open the thumbnail to work out what it was ... I like the painted light effect, it creates a special mood!

Very cool...the colors look like they're floating!!

You did great on the lighting! I especially like how the eyes are lit up!
(please tell me it doesn't kill anyone who looks at it....? )

Okay, someone make a mask gallerie and add the passages for what they were used. I would read it! Very interesing mask, scary looking and you afraid to look away, cause it might come after you. I guess you had the masculine version from Ann's more feminine one :)

Spooky but very interesting,Lee. I like the mood here. I would like to see the other mask you have too. Masks are very fascinating to me and how different cultures use it for different ocassions. Thanks for the link!
