For security reason's the Warden's office was located across the street. The Deputy Warden was in
charge of the daily operations of the prison. Deputy Warden Ted Rothe was shot and killed in this
office by rioting inmates during the 1959 riot.
The painting on the wall is of Frank Conley who arrived at the prison in 1886, transporting two
convicted criminals, and stayed on as a guard. Later he became Acting Warden and then Warden. He
held that position until 1921. He also served as Mayor of Deer Lodge for 31 years, from 1892 to 1929.
