Common Green Darners

Anax junius

Some species such as the Common Green Darners in this photo, guard their mate after egg fertilization
and while she is laying the eggs. This is called "Contact Guarding"
and prevents other males from mating with the female.
By staying in the "Tandem Position" the male can fly, pulling the female with him should it be necessary.
