We live in S. Ontario and have had a bird visiting that looks almost exactly like the ones pictured here, except that he has a fuzzy tuft of down? on top of his head. Could it just be immature? He is friendly, perches at our fish pond and is happily eating insects? or worms along the lawn. We live along the Grand River in Brantford. Noone that I have asked has ever seen a bird of this description, but it does look and act like the green heron. He has now been here for a couple of days.
