Eastern Amberwing (Perithemis tenera)

Averaging less than an inch long, this is Wisconsin's second smallest dragonfly. All show a stout orange-brown abdomen with distinct rings. Males have unmarked amber-tinted wings whereas females show clear wings with dark brown/amber spots and bands. It is fairly common at marshes, ponds, and other still/slow waters during mid-summer, especially July. I saw only one individual in 2008, and that came in southern Wisconsin where the species may be more prevalent.
