This female Hoary Redpoll visited my northern Wisconsin yard throughout the day of 14 February 2009. I included many photos in this gallery to demonstrate the highly-variable appearances that these birds can show in the field and through photographs. Note the bird's frosty back with pale ground color, white and unmarked rump, lightly marked undertail coverts (though two moderate streaks are present when the overlying white feathers are parted), and finely and sparsely marked sides and flanks. The bird's bill is on the large side of what is deemed to be "typical" for Hoary Redpoll but this is not a deal-breaker for the ID given all the other features, especially in the context of the Common Redpolls with which the bird is pictured.
