Ski-tailed Emerald (Somatochlora elongata)

A member of the Somatochlora genus, otherwise known as the "striped emeralds." (1) The anterior yellow thoracic side stripe is elongated like a long, broad stripe, while the posterior yellow stripe is a smaller oval. (2) The abdomen is black and lacks pale spots. (3) Male claspers are "ski"-shaped, while the female has a distinctive triangular "T-type" ovipositor with long cerci. No other Somatochloran has this combination of features. This species is uncommon to rare and mostly found in northern Wisconsin. I saw just a couple of individuals in 2008.
