AIT - Ft. Knox

Advanced Individual Training, otherwise known as AIT, was to be held at Fort Knox in Kentucky. The fun began on 26 April 1970. I had no time to waste going from Basic training to AIT, like just two days.

Three of us from basic, Danny Sampson, Tom Gordon and I, were going to Ft. Knox and all three of us would end up in Vietnam. Tom and I were from the same city in California, Santa Ana. Danny and I would even end up in the same company in Vietnam.

Along with housing the gold supply for the country, Ft. Knox is the armor training center for the Army. While still strict the trainees had much more freedom in AIT than we had in Basic training. There was a commissary and theater on the base and off base passes were available, although I never left the base during my time.

I don't recall much of my time at Ft. Knox but this time I did have a camera and I did take alot of pictures

I spent October and November 1970 at Fort Knox for AIT. Tracked Vehicle Mechanics Course, (63C20) I don't remember exactly where the barracks were located. After that, spent 14 months in Illesheim Germany, A Co., 2nd Bn, 51st Infantry. Anyone else there at that time?

Was at Ft Knox for Basic and AIT Basic E164 DI's were Gunnels and McKinley Dec69-Feb70
went to Ft Benjamin Harrison Indiana for 4 weeks after AIT to get 71h30 then to Germany HQ VII Corps until rts

Basic at Ft. Knox (E-12-5) Feb/Mar 1971, Armor AIT (A-2-1) Apr/May 1971. Start of 29 years active duty in military (2 yrs Army --> college --> 27 years Coast Guard. Ft. Knox - been back couple times - seems so small now.

My name is Mindy Jo I am looking for men whom may have served in the military and Vietnam with my dad Robert (Bobby) Caron, He doesn't remember much of Being in Vietnam nor does he remember what he did to receive the Bronze Star. He did AIT in Ft Knox was in Vietnam until Feb 2nd 1971, at a place named Phu Bai. He also remembers a small village I am guessing was Phu Loc. I really would like to find people that May remember him.

I was in basic training at ft knox in feb 1970 with B-16-4. drill sgts were john hicks and derosa, I can remember some of my fellow recruits last names but nobodys first name. If anybody reads this and were there at the same time, I would like to hear from you. My name is Danny Reagan.

ii took basic training at ft knoe b-16-4 feb 1970 drill sgts hicks and derosa can't remember first names. at cav 9 months than ft lewis 4 months .

Wow, this really takes me back. I was at Ft. Knox from Feb 1970 through May 1970. Was in Bravo-12-5 for basic and Delta-2-1 for AIT as armor crewman. This was a real turning point in my life. I made some of the best friends I ever had, and I grew up. Thanks for the memories you brought back.

Just discovered this site Roger. Brought back some memories. I was at Knox from May 1970 thru August 1970 for Basic and AIT in Armor. Started recalling Delta 16-4 basic barracks across from the Eisenhower Chapel and C-4-1 up in "Disneyland" barracks. My first long time away from home as many others but I got in shape and grew into a man. I'll always remember that it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Thanks for the pictures and the memories.
