Horseshoe Crabs

Florida

These creatures arose 450 million years ago
and have remained unchanged. The photo is
of a mating congregation. The smaller males
attach themselves to the females who lay eggs
in an excavated hole, the eggs being fertilized
by the males as they are laid. These animals
return to their natal hatching site, much as
salmon or sea turtles.
