The earliest known date of existence of this plantation is 1698. The name
Tomotley is reportedly from the Cherokee language but its meaning is
unknown. The estate was inherited by Patience Wise Blackett Izard
in 1813 and she planted the avenue of oaks circa 1820. The long-lived
trees are southern live oaks (Quercus virginiana) and trees in excess
of 500 years of age were once common.
