Spud was drafted during World War II and fought with the 1111th Engineers, 51st Combat Unit,
Company C. This unit was awarded the Presidential Citation for exceptional heroism under combat conditions for the role they played inprotecting the French Village of Trois Ponts during the Battle of the Bulge. Spud was awarded three Bronze stars during his role in the War.
