Carnage crossing the Mara

Masai Mara, Kenya

This band of Wildebeest was part of a large herd that crossed the Mara beside the lower Mara bridge near the Narok Gate. This site was a very poor choice for a crossing and over a 40 minute period we watched as a number of animals lost their life in this crazy misadventure. The river here flows rapidly and there are steep banks with numerous large rocks. Yearling calves were simply washed away by the river whilst numerous adults drowned. We even witnessed a couple of beasts that were partially disemboweled on the sharp rocks whilst others had broken flail limbs -all faced a slow lingering death.
Yet despite this carnage the vast majority of animals managed to get across the river relatively unscathed.
