Leatherback Hatchlings

These youngsters had been rescued from a partially predated nest. They were briefly placed on the sand to allow me to take a quick photograph (unfortunately I screwed up the focus in this image and it would have been wrong to stress them further with repeated flashgun exposure).

It's a stretch of hope, but those who read Tim Flannery's new book, "Stung! : On Jellyfish Blooms and the Future of the Ocean", may begin supporting the banning of "Jewel bags." (See : The New York Review of Books 9-26-13 for a good review.)

So our plastic bags will kill the ocean fauna we depend on, but Jellylife and such will come back from the ages and start the new forms of faunal niches. Is this tragic irony, or reversible mismanagement? This leatherback is also a very old relative we will morn the disappearance of. What an astounding creature! Next to a human it looks to weigh a ton, with a "wing" span ratio double it's body length and body armor inedible to any predator other than us. An aquatic condor with a metabolism many magnitude slower. Thank you for the work! But do you think we can we answer the question of plastic pollution?
