DONANA-OCTOBER 2004

This gallery reflects a week of (rather limited!) birding whilst on a family holiday in October 2004. Birds were much more concentrated than in spring as most of the accessible wetland had dried out whilst many summer visitors had already departed (Bee-eaters, Black Kites, many passerines, etc) though there were still some good birds around.
Almost at the end of our trip I discovered the rice fields of Isla Mayor. Sadly I have few images of the area but the birding was amazing. We stumbled across some recently harvested ricefields which were being re-ploughed whilst still flooded stirring up a soup of invertebrates, crayfish & fish. This drew in massive numbers of waterbirds including both species of Stork (one distant field held about 400 White Storks), large numbers of various Egret species (including a few Great White Egrets) & good numbers of Glossy Ibis & Spoonbills. Unfortunately I had no time to return to get good images but clearly exploring this area following the rice harvest will provide excellent birding opportunities.
