Argiope aurantia: Garden Spider

Chickamauga, Georgia

We call 'em Writing Spiders and an old wives tale says that if they write your name in their web, you would die.

Hi everyone, I have a garden spider right in my window and she's fabulous! I call her Samatha why I don't know. I just thought of the name, she's been with me for about 1 month and has 2 web sacs. Alot of people think I'm weird because I won't kill her, I can't do it! When her babies are born, she'll probably go somewhere and die! But sometimes I'll get up real early and watch her spin her fabulous web. She's at it for hours. I'll miss her when she's gone. Talk about up close and personal!

Found one of these hanging off my deck this morning - kind of frightening until I identified it. Very beautiful and impressive, plus when he feels threatened, he shakes the web violently
